Back to Negative
2017
Keywords: laser cutting, garment construction, 3D form, negative effect
Materials: flexible PU foam, tulle
The aim of this project is to explore the implementation of digital fabrication tools in textile handling. As technology evolves, new methods become available in the textile industry. In this project, I utilized laser cutting to create wearable garments, resulting in three lasercut garments and three garments with a negative effect.
The project is named BACK TO NEGATIVE. In photography, a negative is an image where the lightest areas of the photographed subjects appear darkest, and the darkest areas appear lightest. In my collection, the positive image colour is blue-coated foam, and the negative is almost transparent black tulle. The strong contrast between these materials and the harmony between them create a cohesive aesthetic.
Since the flexible PU foam was stiff, I aimed to enhance its flexibility by cutting out pieces from it. My inspirational cut-out pattern is the isosceles triangle, as geometry has always been a part of my design inspiration. Fixed lines and concrete forms feel mesmerising and have significantly influenced my design thinking.
