INSPIRATION OF FUTUKNITS
I am inspired by dedicated and motivated people. People who make changes, help those in need, take care of the environment and are simply good people. People who make me want to be a better person as well.
Creating this collection I was inspired by making a change in a traditional textile handicraft technique. I began to wonder how many of us know how to knit and will we continue knitting socks, sweaters, mittens to our closed ones? Or should we need to develop a new technique to the modern age people?
That’s when I started to integrate laser cutting technology with hand knitting in a way that these technologies enhance each other. Designs start by drawing on computer, working on a laser cutting machine and lastly, manually knitting everything together. So we will not lose the hand work.
For the material I used lightweight coated polyurethene foam which is normally used in women’s bra. Taking it out to the visible eye, it gets its starry moment in the collection.
Hope this collection questions the perception we have on warm knitwear. And show that knitting is cool!

THESIS ABSTRACT
This thesis examines how the technique of knitting can be developed using digital technologies and unconventional materials. Traditional crafting and digital progress are combined to develop a new alternative technique for making a textile and constructing a garment.
The design process began with investigating key elements of knitting - loops and the material used. A search for one optimal shaped loop was conducted for further experiments with various materials. The materials chosen were considered as unorthodox for traditional knitting. Experimentations led to the creation of an experimental womenswear collection using laser cutting technology for manipulating the coated polyurethane foam. Created laser knit materials were designed to garments based on basic constructions. Additional fabrics were added to make the collection wholesome.
The material samples and collection propose a new technique ‘’laser knitting’’, offer alternative garment construction, manipulate laser cut material properties and question the perception of traditional knitting. Through this, the thesis will add inspiration for textile and fashion industry.
Keywords: knitting, laser cutting, garment construction, fashion, material manipulation
