Shibori workshop
2018

In the Shibori workshop class, I learned various techniques for knotting, tying, stitching, and folding using rubber bands, thread, wooden blocks, and sticks to create unique patterns on fabric. We were introduced to basic techniques and gradually developed new ways and designs.

Shibori dyeing is highly popular in Thailand as it is the most common textile design method. It is sold and seen not only in low-priced markets but also in department stores.

Material: 100% black cotton

Apart from applying dye to white cotton manipulated in the Shibori technique, we learned how to create a new pattern when removing the existing color.

Applying chloride to black fabric removes the visible surfaces of the fabric, while hidden parts remain black. The magic of this technique is that you can never be sure of the resulting new color. I was lucky to get an iron-rusted color that is quite bright, while usually, the results are dark shades of blue, grey, and brown. This depends on how the cotton has been chemically processed in the factory.
